First Norwegian Baptist Church to Bethel Baptist Church

1914-2014  100 Years!
In July, 1915, the church moved into its first regular meeting place at Logan Hall, 413 Logan Avenue, where services were held continually for 14 years.  The first permanent pastor, Rev. J. Simpson, started his work at the church on July 1, 1917.

Following this pastor, Rev. E. N. Tweten (1921) and then Rev. Jensen in 1928.  Shortly after Rev. Jensen's arrival a building committee was appointed and the church on Alexander was bought. This church building is still is in existence and is now a heritage building.  You can read about it here.
 f
In 1941, Rev. C.N.D. Stabell began his ministry and it is within his ministry that the church ceased to function as a Norwegian work and became Bethel Baptist Church.
In 1946, during Rev. John Barbour's ministry the church moved to its present location at 205 Roseberrry St. in St. James.

This is For You, RAY!

Books For Men
Ray comes to the library on Sunday morning and says to me, "so I guess most of the fiction is for women, where are the books for men?"  I have to say that I did read recently how so many Christian fiction books ARE directed to women BUT there are books in the library that men would be interested in....even fiction!! Ray, I hope you are enjoying the books I picked out for you.  Here are some other books that I think men would enjoy.

Storm Warriors by Jon Nappa

The wind-battered sea is roiling as Lionel Lukin, his wife and son sail the English Channel on a small cutter in the 1700s.  When the ship crashes into reefs, Lukin survives--but his family is lost.  Based on fact, this fictionalized account tells how Lukin, driven by selfless passion, saved lives by inventing the lifeboat.

Placebo by Steven James

Jevin Banks, an escape artist who tragically loses his family and his nerve for his craft.  Now he uses his background as an illusionist to debunk fake psychics and televangelists by replicating and exposing what they do on his television show.  When he and his sidekicks, Charlene and Xavier, delve into a pharmaceutical company's research into mind-to-mind communication and therapies that could radically extend life, the worlds of big drug compancies, counter-terrorism, and government collide.  James' brand of high-end suspense distinguishes itself as Christian through characters that stare evil in the face and don't back down because of their faith, despite doubts and confusion.

The Language of God by Francis Collins

The head of the Human Genome Project and former atheist, Collins makes a strong case for BioLogos--God-directed evolution--in comparison to atheistic evolution, Intelligent Design, and creationism.  He offers an awe-inspiring tour of the complexities of biology, genetics, and DNA---and reveals a richly satisfying, harmonious melding of scientific and spiritual worldviews.

To get 5 tickets this week, you can either tell me one book on this blog or get Ray to tell you what books he is reading from our library and then come tell me. Happy Reading!!!  Also, men, if there are books you would like to see in our library, let me know!

History of Bethel Baptist Church

1914-2014

May 4, 1914 the first organizational meeting of the First Norwegian Baptist Church was held in the Scandinavian Baptist Church with ten charter members.  The following day they held their first meeting in the home of the Hermansons, 152 Lyle Street.  Isn't it interesting that our pastor of today lives on Lyle Street. Our church really has been a ministry to the neighborhood for 100 years.  Mr. M.A. Meyer was the leader of the newly organized church which met in the homes of the members with an occasional visits by some minister.
