Manitoba Connection #2

MANITOBA CONNECTION #2

Here are some more books in our church library that have a Manitoba connection in some way.

Certainty: A Place to Stand
by Dr. Grant Richison

A critique of the emergent church of postevangelicals.  Here is a firm place to stand, a logical analysis of how far we have drifted and where we should be.  This book will stretch your thinking and find a firm anchor for your faith.

Dr. Grant Richison was the pastor of Grant Memorial Baptist Church for many years.  He has also taught at Providence College.

Three Loves:  The Sinderson Story
by Edward D. Hughes

George and Ella Sinderson had three loves; love for the Lord, love for Africa and love for each other. Because of these three loves the miracle of transformed loves can be seen in Koumra, Chad and will transform your view of missions.

Both George and Ella Sinderson as well as the author, Edward Hughes belonged to our church for many years.

A Story To Tell
by  Elvin Ensign

This book spans almost a century beginning in 1911.  While the main part of the story takes place in Winnipeg, its influence reached into the western prairies of Canada and into Mexico City.  The mission also had the privilege of giving support to a missionary in the land of Israel.

Elvin R. Ensign along with his wife Nancy was a part of our church for many years.

God Will Provide
by Mary Penner

This book is a testimony of the faithfulness of God in Mary and Irvin Penner's journey of faith as they ministered across Canada with Venture Teams International.

Mary was born and grew up in Southern Manitoba.

Manitoba Connection

MANITOBA CONNECTION

The following is a sample of the some of the books/movies in our church library that have a connection to Manitoba in some way.

Does the Owl Still Call Your Name?

Paths of struggle and renewal goes beneath the surface of human behavior and its symptoms to reveal the causes for addicctive and abusive behavior.

This book was published by Indian Life Ministries which has one of its main publishing places in Winnipeg.  To find out more about how this ministry started in Winnipeg, look here:

The Urban Saint:  The Harry Lehotsky Story

What starts out as a humble focus on meeting the needs of one person at a time, turns into an all out battle of ideals in Winnipeg's downtown.  Harry confronts drug dealers, pawn shop owners, government agencies, politicians and others while facing death threats and even his own doubts about bringing real change to the neighbourhood.

Look here for more on the web about his life:

Pretty Bird, Pretty Bird Fly Far Away
by Sally E. Smith

Beautiful, young and very inexperienced Hilka tries to reamin strong and her own person, but as a stranger in a foreign country she doesn't realize how vulnerable she is.  The once determined Hilka, after marriage to a ambitious company excutive, finds herself in a desparate situation where she fears for her life.

Sally E. Smith currently attends our church and we thank Sally for the donation of several of her books to our library.

Light Reflections
by Alma Barkman

A devotional that reflects on the lessons God has taught her through the ordinary things in life such as a November day, a box of peaches or a toddler eating petunias.

Alma Barkman spent several years at our church.  Here is her website:  http://almabarkman.com/

Snowmen DVD

After a surprising discovery in the snow catapults three small-town boys into the spotlight, the best friends hatch a plan to be remembered forever by setting a Guinness World title. Along the way, the trio battles schoolyard bullies, unites their community and discovers that - while fame may be fleeting - true friendship lasts forever.

What I really liked about this movie was that not everything was in your face and it was very thoughtfully done but  it is still a good family movie.

Robert Kirbyson also used to come to our church many years ago.  In fact a number of years ago, he used to be in the youth group with Alan and I.

Here is some info about Robert Kirbyson from the IDMb site:

For the next few weeks, these and other books with a Manitoba connection will be on display at your church library. Come check it out.
